David Hutchings welcomed the VicRoads announcement, which would see the crossing, where the Bendigo-Maryborough Road meets the Calder Alternative Highway, undergo a $3 million upgrade.
The large diameter roundabout would improve road safety and address the crossing's crash history.
"I think it's a fantastic idea," Mr Hutchings said.
"This is something that VicRoads has been wanting to do for a years. It's a shocking intersection.
"It has just as many crashes there as the Ravenswood Interchange but they are not as severe.
"I think it will dramatically decrease the number of collisions."
VicRoads plans to call tenders for the construction of the project later this year.
The roundabout would cater for the long vehicles that frequently operate along the highway. Street lighting would also be installed to improve the visibility of the crossing.
A woman was killed and another seriously injured in the most recent collision at the crossing last week.
Mr Hutchings, who is the Lockwood Fire Brigade First Lieutenant, said while a roundabout might impact on the noise level made by trucks, it was a small price to pay for the number of lives it could save.
"Something needs to be done. I think the noise level is a small price to pay," he said.
Mr Hutchings described the Calder Alternative Highway as an "appalling section of road" and said it needed to be looked at from a "bigger picture" perspective.
"Incidents happen right along the highway. It's a horrible road. It's windy and goes up and down," he said.
"The whole road needs to be dealt with. A lot needs to be changed."
Meanwhile, a Lockwood resident called for VicRoads to consult with the community over the upgrade.
The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she would like to see give way signs replaced with stop signs at the crossing as an initial measure.
The Bendigo Advertiser is seeking comment from VicRoads as to whether residents will be consulted.
