The town was allocated the Aussie tennis sensation as part of the Australian Open Tennis Blitz.

The Tennis Blitz sees tennis associations accrue points through participation initiatives. They are then allocated players in accordance with their standing.

The men's and women's champions will secure prizes for their towns.

Mount Alexander Shire mayor Christine Henderson said she was delighted with the Melbourne ace's quarter-finals progression. 

"I think the entire town will be behind our tennis club and behind Kyrgios," she said.

"It gives everyone an extra reason to support him."

She said Kyrgios' performance in Sunday's nail-biting fourth round match had her on edge.

Cr Henderson said she would be cheering Kyrgios on against Murray in tomorrow's match.

"My daughter is visiting from England so I think we will all be glued to the TV," she said.

Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club treasurer Faye Noble said the whole club was barracking for the young star. 

"I thought it was special that we were allocated an Australian," she said.

"It's great to see an Australian doing so well."

Mrs Noble said she believed if Kyrgios kept his emotions in check, he could repeat his giant-slaying performances of the past in his match against the Scot.

"He's got a big job ahead of him but so was (his fourth round match against Andreas Seppi)," she said.

"I think if he keeps a cool head and controls his feelings he has a good chance."

Kyrgios has attracted criticism for his behaviour during his five-set win against Seppi on Sunday night.

The teenager swore at the crowd and was involved in terse exchanges with umpires and ball kids.

Kyrgios has already been fined $4926 for previous outbursts during the tournament.

It's likely Castlemaine tennis fans will forgive him his behaviour should he manage to get past Murray.
