BENDIGO YMCA Harriers is a runaway leader in the race for the teams award going into Sunday's finale at the Flack Advisory-backed Victoria Country track and field championships in Bendigo.
After two days of hot competition at Latrobe University Bendigo athletics complex in Flora Hill, Bendigo Harriers is well in front for the overall title and the David Kitt Memorial Trophy for No.1 men's team.
Geelong Guild and Eaglehawk YMCA are in an exciting duel for the Ex-Athletes Cup as leading women's team.
There were many highlights in Saturday's competition.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Eleanor Patterson thrilled the many fans with superb leaps at high jump.
Leongatha-based Patterson represented South Coast.
Bendigo YMCA Harriers' young star Joseph Baldwin cleared 2.04m on his way to victory in the under-16 high jump.
Gold medallists on the track included South Bendigo's Montana MacFarlane, under-20 3000m steeplechase, Teleah Hayes, under-20 1500m run; Zahra Hayes, under-16 3km walk.
Eaglehawk's gold medal winners on the track were Carlie Whitford, under-20 100m, Terry Hicks, 60-plus 400m; Heather Carr, 60-plus 2000m steeplechase and 1500m walk; Annette Major, 50-plus 3km walk.
Bendigo University's Mike Bieleny won the 50-plus 1500m.
Stars from the Bendigo Harriers to win track finals included Brady Threlfall, open 1500m; Kye Jenkyn, under-18 1500m; Luke Rowlatt, under-20 400m; Leanne Hume, 50-plus 1500m; Chris Cox, under-14 400m; Liam Richardson, mixed 100m AWD and mixed 400m AWD.
Field events contested on Saturday were discus, hammer throw, shot put, high jump and triple jump.
The championships have drawn competitors from as far afield as Geelong, Wodonga, Ballarat Harriers, Eureka, Athletics Chilwell, Traralgon, Wellington, Wendouree, Deakin, Corio and more.
Sunday's track program starts at 8am.
First of the field events on Sunday is at 8.30am at LUBAC in Retreat Road.
It's free entry for spectators.
