Axedale events committee member Emma Carmody said the turnout had been amazing.
"I'm not sure how many people are here but it's more than last year," she said.
"I'm standing in the middle and there's people everywhere."
Ms Carmody said merchandise had nearly sold out by 5pm, raising funds for the local community.
"We doubled our order from last year and we're nearly sold out which is pretty amazing," she said.
"Last year we raised $12,000 so we're hoping to match that or hopefully better it and that goes directly to the Axedale primary school, preschool and public hall so all the money that we raise today stays in Axedale."
The main event is the open shearers late in the afternoon.
"That’s the spectacle that everyone wants to come for because they can shear a sheep in under a minute so that's pretty awesome," Ms Carmody said.
But serious competition aside she also emphasised the fun family atmosphere.
"Everyone's having a beer and watching the shearing, it's just really good fun," she said.
"We've got the local policeman on the dunking machine as I speak, with the other policeman throwing balls at him."
Ms Carmody said last year's event had attracted over 700 people.
"The locals said they'd never seen so many people in the park at one time," she said.
The event also features a community market, gymnastics display, quilt exhibition and children's activities including face painting, jumping castles and craft activities.
It concludes at 8pm.
