Private Harry Aloysius Hobson
Private Harry Aloysius Hobson, service number 3864, 5th Battalion, enlisted on July 24, 1915, aged 24.
His younger brother, Leo, enlisted around the same time and they left on November 23, 1915, per HMAT Ceramic A40 with the 5th Infantry Battalion, 1 to 12.
Harry was employed as a blacksmith before enlisting and he lived at 213 Barnard Street, Bendigo, with his mother, Mrs E. Hobson, who was listed as his next of kin.
Private Leo Leslie Hobson, service number 3865, 5th Battalion, enlisted on August 2, 1915, and returned to Australia on March 28, 1919. Leo was aged 22 and a dipper at the time of his enlistment.
Both were born at Bendigo to Samuel Joseph and Elizabeth Hobson nee Hunt. Their father died at the Bendigo Hospital in 1909, aged 48.
The Bendigonian, Thursday, November 29, 1917, page 8:
Private Harry Hobson, 5th Battalion, son of Mrs Hobson, of Barnard Street, returned to Bendigo last Thursday invalided home, and received a very warm welcome. His brother, Private Leo Hobson, is still in England. Private H. Hobson was wounded three or four times.
George Duncan Radnell
George Duncan Radnell, service number 1734 (aka George David Radnell) was born in 1898 Tarnagulla to William John and Annie Radnell nee Titus.
He enlisted on January 19, 1915, and gave his age as 18. He embarked on March 20, 1915, from Melbourne per HMAT Shropshire A9. His next of kin was listed as his father W.J. Radnell.
Serving with the 14th Battalion, Private Radnell died of wounds on June 1, 1918. He had been awarded the Military Medal in September 1917. His older brother, Charles Victor, was killed in action in 1917.
Private Lionel Elliott
Private Lionel Elliott, service number 4489, embarked from Melbourne on January 28, 1916, per HMAT Themistocles A32 with the 6th Infantry Battalion - 13 to 18 Reinforcements.
He had been employed as a battery feeder before his enlistment on June 24, 1915. Lionel was aged 18 and his address was Brazier Street, Eaglehawk. He supplied his aunt's details as next of kin - Mrs J. Harris, Curnow Street, Bendigo. Jane was the wife of George Harris and was born in Inglewood. Lionel’s birth has not been located.
Private Elliott returned to Australia on December 11, 1919, and died at Heidelberg in 1960 aged 64.
Lionel provided details to the Red Cross when his friend, Jack Rose, was killed in action in October 4, 1917. Private Elliott had been wounded at the same time and saw his mate's body as he came back to the clearing station. He died not knowing where Jack was buried.
