BENDIGO has no known terrorist threats at this stage, but police in the region are still encouraged to be on high alert.
The Australian Federal Police raised the terrorism warning level for Australian police from medium to high on Tuesday, taking in all division across the country.
Bendigo Police Inspector Peter Greaney said police were not aware of any threats towards police in the region at this stage.
He said the increased warning encouraged officers to be more aware of their own personal security and the security of their colleagues.
"The increased warning just raises our security awareness to a degree," Inspector Greaney said.
"Officers will be more security conscious.
"We will also be looking at the security of police premises."
Inspector Greaney could not discuss operational changes that could occur.
He said there was no reason for the Bendigo public to be concerned or alarmed by the change.
The alert level for police was raised to bring it in line with the rest of the community after the federal government raised the national terror threat level to high in September last year.
The change resulted in the removal of the bins at Bendigo Railway Station, among other major stations across Australia.
Victoria Police Acting Chief Commissioner Tim Cartwright wrote to all police members, PSOs and Victoria Police staff urging them to be vigilant and pay extra attention to their own safety and security.
Victoria Police released a statement on Tuesday morning which stated all officers had received instructions and advice to allow information countering terrorism operations to flow to those who need it.
The AFP also released a statement, stating the change came about after careful consideration and discussion with police partners.
"The terrorism threat level against police is assessed as high, which is commensurate with the broader threat level for the community," the statement said.
