Patrick Janes, 24, was handed the reins of his boss's metal fabricating business just over a year ago.
Last year, he took part in Getting Down to Business - a government initiative aimed at providing youth with a framework to develop entrepreneurial skills - and said it had helped him immensely.
The program is set to run in 2015 and is for people aged between 16 and 25.
Mr Janes said the program has given him valuable insight to the skills needed to run a successful business.
"It really gave me an insight into the behind-the-scenes stuff of a business," he said.
"It helped me gain the skills I needed to make the business unique and and to look after customers better."
Mr Janes said said he also benefited from having a mentor and engaging with other aspiring entrepreneurs.
"It really gets you energised to go out and change your business. I am glad I did it," Mr Janes said.
Frank Wyatt, who is involved in the initiative, said it was started last year.
He said participants had taken part in webinars and training programs.
"The Department of Human Services initiated the program as a means of engaging young people in the community through connecting and helping them fulfill an idea they might have to create a business,"he said.
"Nothing else was around to support 16 to 25 year olds. There was support but it was essentially targeted at existing businesses, businesses that had evolved already and had the fluidity, money and capacity to grow."
