Restoration work is continuing on Bendigo's St Paul's Cathedral with a new movable floor nearing completion.
Dean of St Paul's the Very Reverend John Roundhill said it was hoped the upgrade would provide a facility that could be enjoyed by the wider community.
"The new floor's going to sit around this amazing new platform which rises up and provides this dais for when we have services, but crucially it can come down and be flat and provide probably one of the biggest flat venues in Bendigo. It's going to be an amazing venue for any kind of social function," he said.
"Even though it's going to be a fabulous worship space, it’s a space we can share with the city."
The cathedral has been closed since 2008 when a traditional quarter peel marking the death of one of the building's bell ringers caused material from the bell tower to become dislodged.
Despite the closure the dean said the congregation had actually grown in that time with more services being added to the Sunday schedule.
"A good number of the congregation have never been in the cathedral, which is an extraordinary thing to think about," he said.
