POLICE are urging motorists to plan ahead when travelling on the roads this holiday period.
The warning comes after a 72-year-old Swan Hill man sustained serious internal injuries following a three car collision in Ironbark on Thursday.
Bendigo Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Kevyn Hume-Cook said the man was driving a white Toyota Camry along Honeysuckle Street when he failed to give way at Barnard Street.
He said the man collided with a white Nissan Navara travelling along Barnard Street about 4.30pm.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said two occupants of a silver Corolla travelling behind the Toyota Camry pulled over to call police.
"The (Toyota Camry) has rolled down and struck it," Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said.
The two occupants of the Corolla and the sole occupant of the Nissan were uninjured.
CFA and SES crews worked for about 30 minutes to free the Swan Hill man from the Camry before he was taken to hospital by road ambulance.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said two passengers were also taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
He said he did not believe alcohol had played a factor in the collision but the man's blood alcohol level would be assessed.
"It looks like they may have just been lost and did not observe the give way sign," he said.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said charges were yet to be laid.
He said the message was clear - motorist need to concentrate.
"People needed to be concentrating 100 per cent when they are driving. Pay attention while you are behind the wheel," he said.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said motorists travelling on unfamiliar roads should plan ahead before getting behind the wheel.
"Christmas, New Year while people are travelling they need to take real notice of their surroundings," Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said Christmas was traditionally quiet for traffic and it was not until Boxing Day when the roads would become busy.
He said drivers should ensure they are not fatigued.
