STANHOPE, Kyabram and Rushworth Police, along with Echuca Highway Patrol officers, will keep a close eye on Greens Lake during its closure from December 29 to January 1.
A road block will be established on Greens Lake Road before the closure on December 29, announced by Goulburn-Murray Water in September after several incidents at the lake on New Year's last year.
Stanhope Police Leading Senior Constable Bob Naismith said police would have a presence at the Corop site in an educational sense.
"It's just about informing anyone who comes up what the go is," he said.
"We need to keep in mind for everybody that the lake will be closed."
He said anyone who breaches the road block could be charged with trespass.
More than 400 people attended the lake last New Year's.
Despite being a Total Fire Ban day, campers lit a number of bonfires and let off fireworks.
Excessive alcohol use and drug use was also reported at the site. A Kyabram teenager was also glassed.
The year before an unlicenced bar was also found selling alcohol to underage drinkers.
Police also attended three false callouts to the lake just so revelers could "give us the Bronx cheer", Leading Senior Constable Naismith said.
He said the community had an expectation that its facilities remain safe.
"Of all the people in town we've spoken to, three or four weren't for it. After I explained the reasons to them, all of them said they could see where we're coming from," Leading Senior Constable Naismith said.
"Nearby farmers have told me it's about time it happened.
"It's just a common sense approach."
Goulburn-Murray Water heeded the calls from local police and the Corop Fire Brigade to restrict access to the lake during the period.
The Corop Community Action Group also backed the decision.
The lake will reopen at noon on January 1.
