The city will host a national gymnastics carnival each September for the next three years.
The national governing body Gymnastics Australia announced today with the support of the City of Greater Bendigo and Sport and Recreation Victoria, that both the annual Aerobics Australian Championships and AEROSchools competition, and the inaugural National Clubs Carnival will be held in Bendigo from next year.
Scheduled to be a 12-day festival of gymnastics, the event will attract almost 4000 competitors, officials, and support staff, and additional spectators from across Australia.
Gymnastic Australia oversees Australia’s competitive representation at elite sports events such as the Olympic Games through to community and school participation.
“The event will showcase performances of the Olympic disciplines of men’s, women’s, rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics, as well as the highly energetic sport aerobics, acrobatic gymnastics and the non-competitive gymnastics for all," Gymnastics Australia CEO Mark Rendell said.
“Gymnastics is a truly global sport with 140 countries affiliated to the international governing body. In Australia, Gymnastics Australia has more than 165,000 registered members and has enjoyed continuous growth throughout the last 10 years."
City of Greater Bendigo mayor Peter Cox said he welcomed this fantastic major event to Bendigo for the next three years.
“This is an exciting event for Bendigo and it highlights the city’s reputation and capacity to host national sporting events at facilities such as Bendigo Stadium, Flora Hill Stadium and the new Ulumbarra Theatre," Cr Cox said.
“The City continues to work hard to attract events to the region and the carnival will provide significant economic benefits for our local economy over the next three years and will showcase Bendigo’s wonderful facilities and lifestyle to some 4000 people.”
