Thank goodness no one was hurt when two home-made pipe bombs went off near the Golden Vine Hotel and the Bendigo Library.
By all accounts the explosions were extremely loud and had the potential to cause serious physical harm.
One woman commented on the Bendigo Advertiser Facebook page that she was standing next to the Hargreaves Street bomb just a minute before it detonated.
If it was intended to be an amusing prank, that's concerning, because it was anything but funny.
lt was a reckless act, and disturbing too, because planting such powerful explosives would have taken a degree of forethought. It scared the community and disrupted businesses.
As Detective Sergeant Rainey said yesterday this was "stupidity at its best, particularly in the current climate with events around the country".
Hopefully those responsible will learn to others' safety before their own amusement.
