The duel between Ironside from Eaglehawk YMCA and Symons from Bendigo Harriers for the under-14 boys' pentathlon was among many highlights at the Latrobe University Bendigo athletics complex in Flora Hill.
A great afternoon for Symons at the Retreat Road complex began with a record-breaking time of 13.94 seconds in the 90m hurdles.
The previous best was 14.03.
Symons and Ironside, both 13, went on to break the AB record of 2486 points for the under-14 boys' pentathlon score.
At the end of a five-discipline contest - 90m hurdles, high jump, 200m, shot put and 800m - it was Ironside on top of the leader board on 2728 points.
Symons scored 2543 points as Marco Lane from Wodonga, two years younger than his opponets, scored 973 points.
Versatility and endurance was put to the test across the five-discipline, seven-event pentathlon, or 10-event decathlon.
Events run on Saturday included high jump, 200m, shot put, 800m, javelin, long jump, discus, and 1500m.
The pentathlon was completed on Saturday, with the heptathlon and decathlon to continue from 10am on Sunday at LUBAC in Retreat Road.
