The Bendigo Theatre Company production will open in June next year. It will be the company's first production in the new theatre.
Mary Poppins director Matt Emond said he was excited to take on the classic story.
"It's a fantastic show," he said.
"The current production that is going through Broadway and the West End as well as the magic Walt Disney bought to it during the 60s is a beautiful amalgamation.
"It will be a great show for Bendigo audiences."
BTC's creative team took the chance to have a look through the theatre along with Tara Patullo who dressed as Mary for the tour.
"The exciting thing about the project is that the theatre hasn't even finished being built yet," he said.
"It's a rare occasion to be walking through a construction site knowing that in about seven months time it will be a fully functional theatre.
'We want to get a sense of it. It's a lot different to The Capital, which has been a very loyal space of the years.
"But (Ulumbarra) is something out of the box. It is an amazing structure."
Mr Emond and his creative team are hoping to make Mary fly for the show.
"We are aspiring to make her fly. She'll fly," he said.
Auditions are expected to be held in mid or late March next year.
"We really encourage people who can sing, dance or act to audition," Mr Emond said.
"If you want an opportunity to step in to this wonderful space and to work with our creative team, we would love to see as many of Bendigo creative types as we can get involved."
