This archway has become a significant part of our city landscape since it was gifted to the city by the Baoding government in 1996 and that should demand its restoration if the termite and rot damage is not beyond repair.
The City of Greater Bendigo has acted properly in putting the safety of people first after an inspection found the damage had rendered the historic archway dangerous.
But now the onus is on council to look at every possibility to see the grand archway restored.
We can't regard this archway as important but discard it as soon as an issue is found.
Council appears committed to seeing if the archway can be restored and the community must trust them to follow this through.
