One of Victoria’s oldest rivalries will be fought out under lights in a twilight fixture at the iconic ground in Central Victoria with the Brian Molony Cup between VWA AFL Victoria Country No.1 side and the VAFA No.1 outfit to begin at 4.00pm.
The game will follow two other huge matches at the same ground with AFL Victoria Country U19s pitted against VAFA U19s at 9.45am and AFL Victoria Country No.2 taking on VAFA (Premier B – Division 4) at 12.40pm. (All times approximate at present).
These matches continue a proud history of representative football between the two football bodies that dates back more than three decades to 1984.
Such is the ferocity of the contests that the premier game between AFL Victoria Country No.1 and VAFA No.1 has been decided by less than a goal in each of the past three encounters.
AFL Victoria Community Football and Engagement Manager Brett Connell said he was excited to see the showcase carnival take place at such an iconic community venue.
“It’s really pleasing that City of Bendigo has made the QEO available for the event which has become a highlight on the football calendar,” he said.
“These representative matches offer the best community footballers from across country Victoria and the Victoria Amateur Football Association’s many divisions a chance to test themselves at a higher level and return their local clubs to share their experience.”
“The Victoria Country No.2 v VAFA (Prem B – Div 4) encounter means that regardless of the standard competition they compete in, players can still experience the honour of representative football.”
“Finally, the U19 encounter provides an additional opportunities for the best young players in country Victoria to showcase their abilities and potentially present their case to be given a chance at a higher level.”
The Victorian Amateur Football Association is currently the No.1 ranked metropolitan senior competition after securing the title with victory over the Eastern Football League at the Metro Championships earlier this year.
They will be hoping defend that title against the Northern Football League on Saturday March 28 in the 2015 Metro Championships.
The three AFL Victoria Country teams will be selected following the VWA Country Championships on Saturday 23 May.
The Brian Molony Cup celebrates the contribution of a former director and life member of the Victorian Country Football League Brian Molony.
