THE Capital Theatre hosts more than 150 shows each year, and relies on its volunteers to keep the iconic venue open for everyone. One of those volunteers is Heather Campbell, an usher who has loved the past six years she has spent working at the theatre outside her day job at Bendigo Bank.

The Capital has many performances and exhibitions, including music, plays, ballet and opera, with volunteers giving up their time for a wide variety of shows. “It’s nice to see something big, without living in a big city,” Ms Campbell said.
Since 2008 Ms Campbell, along with more than 45 regular volunteers, has helped to usher people to their seats, diplomatically solving issues with theatregoers, as well as being well trained to keep people safe by evacuating the building in case of fire or other emergencies.
“When you get older, you want to give back to the community,” she said. It is so rewarding, “I’ll do that ‘til I die”.
Once work at the Ulumbarra Theatre is complete in 2015, it will boast one of the largest stages in the country, and will need many more volunteers.
