AN employment firm in Bendigo believes the Federal Government is doing the right thing by jobseekers and employers.
As Federal Employment Minister Eric Abetz met with staff at Sureway Employment and Training in Bendigo on Monday, company CEO David Galloway said some changes had "simplified" the process with job agencies.
"One of the positive things the government has done has been to reduce red tape in employment services," he said.
"They got rid of a lot of processes and practices that required a lot more administration. Now our staff can focus more on working directly with people looking for work."
Sureway has 886 people on its books in Bendigo, all looking for employment opportunities.
Should the government get its agenda through Parliament, each unemployed person would be required to have a meeting with an employment agency once a month.
The Work for the Dole scheme would also be re-introduced.
Mr Galloway said he believed these measures would encourage people back into work, but was worried the government was losing the debate.
"The way these measures were sold was poor," he said.
Based out of Wagga Wagga, Mr Galloway said Bendigo benefited from a "diverse labour market".
"There are jobs available in healthcare and community services, as well as manufacturing," he said.
"Retail is not as strong at the moment, but hospitality is another area where people can find jobs."
Mr Galloway did not believe employers would be overwhelmed when the unemployed must submit 20 applications per month.
He said employment agencies would only forward on relevant applications to employers.
"This means that employers might only receive 10 or so applications, instead of being flooded with them," Mr Galloway said.
