JACINTA Allan and Maree Edwards will both retain their seats with strong swings towards the Labor Party in Bendigo.

With 66 per cent of the vote counted in Bendigo West, Maree Edwards had achieved a margin of 12.6 per cent, an increase of almost 10 per cent from 2010.

Bendigo East had 52 per cent of the vote counted, with Jacinta Allan achieving a margin of 5.8 per cent, up from 3.8.

Statewide, the swing to Labor had been more than 2 per cent.

Speaking after claiming victory in Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan said she hoped to have the support of her colleagues to become a minister in a new Andrews government.

"But tonight is really about getting over that big hurdle that is holding the marginal seat of Bendigo East," she said.

"There are obviously a number of votes to be counted, but the swing here in Bendigo replicates the statewide swing. It's pretty clear that the community here in Bendigo and regional Victoria have spoken pretty loudly and pretty clearly.

"They want to see the back of this chaotic, crisis-driven Napthine Liberal government."

In Bendigo West, Castlemaine heavily backed Labor MP Maree Edwards. She received almost double the votes in Castlemaine compared to Liberal candidate Michael Langdon.

Campbells Creek also delivered a similar result.

Ms Edwards said she was "very pleased" to receive strong backing from the Mt Alexander section of the electorate.

She said the replacement of Liberal candidate Jack Lyons had contributed to the strong result.

"I think there were two issues in Bendigo West that affected the outcome tonight," she said.

"There were two candidates for Bendigo West, but second of all was that the Nationals had stepped away from both Bendigo East and Bendigo West."

The Greens also increased their primary vote in both Bendigo East and Bendigo West.

Bendigo East candidate Jennifer Alden increased the primary vote from 6.3 to 7.6 per cent, while Bendigo West candidate John Brownstein achieved 11.7 per cent, up from 10.9 in 2010.

Ms Alden said she was pleased with the positive result for the Greens in Bendigo East and Bendigo West.

"There has been consistent growth in our vote in both seats," she said.

"More and more people are now considering Greens. Having that voice in the lower house now will also assist us in putting the environment on the agenda."

City of Greater Bendigo councillor and Australian Country Alliance candidate Elise Chapman received 2.7 of the primary vote in Bendigo West, ahead of the Rise Up Australia candidate but behind Family First.
