MEREDITH and Lyndon Herbert couldn’t have been any prouder as they walked the fairways of Metropolitan Golf Club watching their son Lucas do his thing.
The Ravenswood couple rode every tee shot and putt as Lucas went within four shots of claiming the Australian Masters title as an amateur.
“He’s done incredibly well. Everything was a bonus for this tournament. The experience and opportunity to play with players of this calibre was a dream come true,’’ Meredith said.
The parents rode an emotional rollercoaster over the tournament.
“At one stage on Friday we didn’t know if he’d make the cut, then he had an amazing round on Saturday,’’ Meredith said.
“Then there was the ups and downs of today. I’m sure the emotions we had were nothing like what Lucas was going through himself today.”
Lucas seemed to handle the big occasion with aplomb.
“Before Lucas started his round he said he wasn’t nervous at all,’’ Meredith said.
“He was out there to enjoy himself and learn from it.
“The galleries don’t seem to worry him, although maybe on the 18th today the crowd might have got to him with that double bogey.”
Herbert was followed by a huge Bendigo contingent on Sunday, including many club mates from Neangar Park Golf Club.
“The support from Bendigo has been amazing,’’ Meredith said.
“It means so much to him to have his friends here and the support from across Bendigo has been terrific.
“Thanks to everyone that has sent their best wishes. It means a lot to us.”
