The 17-year-old travelled to Canberra on Tuesday for a week-and-a-half long volleyball camp.
About 40 athletes are set to take part in the program, all eyeing a scholarship spot with the academy.
Haythorne said he was familiar with the facilities in Canberra and hoped he would impress the selection committee.
"It is going to be challenging but I am looking forward to it," he said.
"All the best players in the country will be at the camp."
Haythorne said the first four days will be about taking part in drills and specific tasks, before competing in the Good Neighbour competition.
"It is an international friendly tournament, there will be a few international teams competing, including Papua New Guinea," he said.
It is the second time the Bendigo Academy of Sport athlete would have visited the AIS this year.
“It is a pretty great opportunity,” Haythorne said.
Haythorne was a part of the Australian youth training camp in Thailand in April and also won a bronze medal at the national titles.
“James has been committed and hardworking over the last few years with his volleyball especially this year doing his volleyball and year 12,” Bendigo Aacademy of Sport head volleyball coach Todd Broadbent said.
“The Bendigo Bank Academy of Sport Volleyball Program wish James all the best at the Australian camp.
“We are sure he will do very well.”
