Opening on Saturday, December 6, is a solo exhibition of work by locally based photographer Carolyn Dew, titled The Artificial Kingdom. Dew was the inaugural recipient of the Going Solo program, an initiative that formalises the gallery’s commitment to supporting the practice of artists living in central Victoria.
Every year applications are considered and an artist is awarded the chance to present an exhibition of their recent work in the gallery, fully supported by the curatorial staff.
Throughout her practice, Dew has explored ideas surrounding everyday personal and cultural practices expressed through domestic environments.
With this latest photographic series Dew has delved into the creation of memorials in cemeteries in regional Victoria and further afield.
Joyful, poignant and at times curious, Dew respectfully captures the permanent and transitional arrangements created by anonymous individuals as they construct environments for loved ones past. Dew has studied photography at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the Victorian College for the Arts. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Melbourne and central Victoria.
Also opening in December is a solo exhibition of work by Ben Quilty. On display from December 12, Quilty is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most significant contemporary painters.
Born in Sydney, he studied at Sydney College of the Arts and University of Sydney and has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships. This exhibition will bring together all the works exhibited in London as well as Kuta Rorschach No. 2, a major work recently acquired by Bendigo Art Gallery.
And opening on December 11 at our satellite space, the Post Office Gallery on Pall Mall, will be Bendigo enlists: the First World War 1914–18, to commemorate the centenary of the Anzacs from Bendigo’s own perspective.
The exhibition will explore Bendigo’s stories through text, objects and photographs to give visitors a more personal account of the battles and tales of its community.
The gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm (except December 25). For more details, follow us on Facebook or check our website www.bendigoartgallery.com.au
