AXEDALE fire brigade attended its first fire without sounding its station siren on Saturday evening.
The fire burnt 67 acres at Muskerry, 10 kilometres north of the town, heading north east from near Barnadown-Knowsley Road.
Brigade member Ben Rice said people in Axedale were unaware of the fire, including several firefighters.
"No one in the town knew about the fire because the siren didn't go off," he said.
"One of our members has no pager and only knew about the fire because he saw the trucks were gone.
"We don't usually have enough pagers for all of our members."
A CFA decision to not address two objections to a siren during the construction of Axedale's new fire station meant the brigade did not have the planning approval to operate one.
The brigade was notified it could not use it beyond Wednesday.
The brigade also provided cover at Axe Creek for Saturday's fire at Sedgwick. While stationed at Sedgwick, the Axe Creek siren sounded alerting members to a second fire nearby.
Mr Rice said it highlighted why station sirens are "important" in small communities.
Residents were believed to be considering a petition to lobby for the reinstatement of the siren.
Axedale Wines' Robyn Rounds said living on the edge of town, she relied on the siren during the fire season.
"If I don't have any warning, I'm in trouble," she said.
"Every small town I've lived in since I was a child has had a siren - it used to be that when you hear it, you'd go outside and would be aware of what was going on.
"We rely on our firefighters, and we rely on the siren."
The CFA chose to proceed with the fire station without a permit for the siren to minimise delays in the station's completion. CFA District 2 operations manager Steve Smith said the CFA would apply for a permit to have a siren.
Ms Rounds said the siren had played a part in alerting her during serious fires about five years ago.
"I'm just a bit shocked that we don't have a siren," she said.
Community group Axedale - Our Town Our Future will meet on Wednesday night to decide its response to the decision.
