THE indoor-based competitions were the winners on the second day of the Castlemaine Show as wind and rain swept across the region.

After a stellar opening night on Friday, the afternoon's tricky weather saw a few less people pass through the gates on Saturday in an otherwise well-attended show.

Castlemaine and District Agricultural Show Society secretary Debbie Hamilton said the community had embraced the historic event.

"The gate was excellent for Friday night," she said.

"It was excellent today as well before the wind and rain came through."

More than 2000 people attended Friday night to take in the wood chopping, art and craft competitions and festive spirit.

Entries into the fleece competition were higher than previous years, along with cooking, craft and horticultural competitions.

Ms Hamilton said the weather had a slight impact on some of the animal competitions.

"The rain kept a few entries away from the horse competitions," she said.

"We did get a lot of sheep though."
