Bendigo Health Foundation events co-ordinator Kiri Earl said last year's event totalled 2991 registrations, with this year's online count hitting 2925 as of noon on Thursday.
She said online registrations would not close and about 40 to 50 people would sign up on the day.
"Over the next couple of days we expect to get a lot more. Everyone waits to see the weather," she said.

Sunday's event boasts a new track, with participants set to leave from the Bendigo Visitor Centre in Pall Mall before completing either a five, 10 or 15 kilometre event.
Ms Earl said the new start area would cater for the event's growing popularity.
She said 100 per cent of funds raised would go to the hospital's renal dialysis unit.
"We want to try and provide more equipment for when patients come in for hemodialysis. We want to ensure they are comfortable, there are enough chairs and there is new technology that expands the opportunity for patients undergoing hemodialysis," she said.
"The event also promotes good health and fitness."
All participants will receive a gold medal at the finish line and the opportunity to enjoy a free healthy breakfast.
People can register either as individuals or part of a team with family, friends or work mates.
Participants who have registered online but have not received their race packs can do so at Bendigo Bank's central branch near The Exchange on Friday from 10am to 4pm, or Saturday from 9 to 11.30am.
Ms Earl said weather conditions on Sunday were shaping up to be "perfect".
"It is looking for be about 20 degrees - not too hot or too cold. For those who want to wear an old jumper in the morning if the weather is a bit cold, the Salvation Army will have donation bins at the start line so people can put their old clothes in and donate," she said.
