English was the first subject to go under the microscope - one of the most important and difficult exams.
Bendigo Senior Secondary College students used the classic text of This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff for possibly the last time, as well as the poetry of Wilfred Owen.
They had spend the last nine months pouring over the works, in addition to the language analysis section.
Student Kimberly Adams said the most difficult part was remembering all of the vital information to include in the exam.
"In the SACS during the year, we were able to take in a cheat sheet to help us out, so it was a lot more difficult" she said.
Parent and occasional English teacher Nick Freeman said he thought it was "a good paper".
"It gave the students an opportunity to explore a broad range of ideas," he said.
"The majority of students would be confident in at least a few of the sections, which is always a great help."
Psychology and Economics exams are on Thursday, Biology on Friday and Maths next week.
