FOR the second time in as many seasons, Emu Creek pair Daniel Chamberlain and Simon Marwood have plundered centuries against Axe Creek in the Emu Valley Cricket Association.
Twin tons from Chamberlain and Marwood guided the Emus out of trouble and to a comfortable win over the Cowboys on Saturday.
Resuming at 3-9 chasing the Cowboys’ 211, the Emus lost their fourth wicket early with the score on 26 when Shane Hamilton (14) was dismissed.
At 4-26 and still 186 runs shy of victory, the Emus were staring at back-to-back defeats to open the season.
However, captain Chamberlain and Shaun Cattanach (68) put the Emus on the path to victory with a 158-run stand for the fifth wicket.
When Cattanach was dismissed with the score on 184, Marwood kept the runs ticking over with Chamberlain, helping the Emus to a total of 330.
Chamberlain made 100 before he was the sixth wicket to fall with the score on 264.
All-rounder Marwood finished unbeaten on 116.
Marwood scored 116 of Emu Creek’s last 146 runs.
A year ago when Emu Creek took on Axe Creek, also in round two, Marwood scored 163 n.o and Chamberlain 145 in the Emus’ total of 7-520.
Saturday’s bowling figures had a unique look for Axe Creek, with all 11 players featured.
The 11th bowler used, Greg Burns, cleaned up late in the innings, taking 4-28 off 3.4 overs, while Grant Le Poidevin finished with 3-31, having taken two of his wickets last week.
• West Bendigo’s Ken Bell and Gary Singh batted the Redbacks out of a precarious position and to a win over Marong.
The Redbacks resumed at 4-61 chasing the Panthers’ 120.
But it quickly got worse for the Redbacks as the Panthers snared three quick wickets to leave West Bendigo reeling at 7-72.
But Bell and Singh rescued the Redbacks with an eighth-wicket partnership of 152.
Having resumed the day on 22, Bell batted through the rest of the innings in making 112 n.o. - his sixth ton since the 2007 season.
Bell’s 112 n.o. followed his unbeaten 28 in the first round against Golden Gully.
No.9 Singh offered fine support in his knock of 70 as he and Bell moved the score along from 72 to 224.
Having claimed 3-8 on day one last week, Jeremy Ross finished with 5-40 off 20.1 overs for the Panthers.
Duane Anderson (2-34) and Dean Cosgriff (2-60) took two wickets each for Marong.
Marong batted 18 overs in its second innings and reached 0-98.
Captain Tom Huf (57 n.o., 10 fours) and Scott McLarty (37 n.o.) made the most of the second innings batting practice, but the Panthers would be disappointed they didn’t perform with the bat when it counted last week.
• Golden Gully bounced back from its round one shocker to defeat reigning premier United by 106 runs.
The Tigers never threatened to chase down the Cobras’ 9-276 and were bowled out for 170.
The United innings was in tatters early at 4-20 and later 5-47.
New captain Matt Kile snared 4-47 for the Cobras, while Seb Olle (2-24) and Shaun O’Shea (2-47) both picked up two wickets.
As well as Olle’s two wickets, he also run out Benjamin Smith (6) and caught Kevin Archbold (11).
After the first five wickets combined for just 47 runs, the last five added 123 for the Tigers.
Captain Forbes Klemm battled hard for the top score of 43, while Patrick Hartney added 32.
Klemm and Hartney put on 67 for the sixth wicket during what was a rare loss for the Tigers to the Cobras.
• Mandurang survived some anxious moments before chasing down Sedgwick’s challenging 244 thanks to a 10th-wicket partnership between two of its recruits - James Pietromonaco and Mark Roberts.
Sedgwick looked on the path to victory when the Rangas fell to 9-221.
However, No.9 Pietromonaco and No.11 Roberts scored the 24 runs needed for victory - and then some.
Pietromonaco and Roberts added 41 for the last wicket as the Rangas answered with 262.
Pietromonaco finished 25 n.o., while Roberts scored 16.
Earlier, opener Phil Berry (50) and captain Ben Rodda (50) both scored half-centuries for the Rangas.
Hard-hitting opener Matt Giri (34) and Michael Healy (23) also chipped in with contributions for Mandurang, which as a club created history with wins through each of its division one, two, three, under-12 and under-14 teams on the same day for the first time.
After making a century in round one, Sedgwick’s Matt Dwyer also has a five-wicket haul to his name.
Dwyer bagged 5-53 off 16 overs.
• Spring Gully won its first game of the season with a 120-run victory over Maiden Gully.
The Crows answered the Gully’s 111 with 231, with the innings highlighted by an eighth-wicket partnership between Andrew Renato and Timothy Budge.
Spring Gully had the game safely locked away at 7-120, before Renato (61 n.o.) and Budge (53) added salt to the Maiden Gully wounds by putting on 110 for the eighth wicket.
Captain Alex Sutton earlier played a leading in role in setting up the Crows’ successful run-chase with 41, coming in with Spring Gully 2-24.
Jack Stagg was the best of the Maiden Gully bowlers with an economical 3-13 off seven overs.
Scott McCoomb (2-40) picked up two wickets for the Gully, removing both Crows’ openers Jayden Mannix (14) and Des Gilmore (0).
The loss leaves Maiden Gully joining Marong as the only winless teams after two rounds.
