UPDATE 3PM:
GREAT Strides fun run at Lake Weeroona has raised about $35,000.
The money will go to Cystic Fibrosis Victoria.
Organiser Kristy Cain, whose two children Lincoln, 5, and Skyrah, 1, have cystic fibrosis, said the rough total was $10,000 more than last year.
"It was really great to see so many people there," she said.
"We really wanted to give back to Cystic Fibrosis Victoria because of how much they helped us.
"Hopefully it will help them help other families."
EARLIER:
HUNDREDS of people have gathered at Lake Weeroona for the sixth annual Great Strides fun run.
The event promotes awareness of cystic fibrosis and raises funds for Cystic Fibrosis Victoria.
Last year's event raised $25,000, with organisers hoping to hit the $40,000 mark this year.
City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Barry Lyons declared the fun run open earlier this morning.
"Welcome to Bendigo on this beautiful day," he said.
"I hope you enjoy your walk, your run and your money raising efforts."
Mr Lyons, who is friends with organiser Kristy Hunt's parents, said the fun run had grown over the years.
"Great Strides is Cystic Fibrosis Victoria's largest fundraising event," he said.
"The funds raised ensure Cystic Fibrosis Victoria can continue to provide essential services and programs to the fibrosis community."
Sarah Greenwood said her friend had two children with cystic fibrosis.
"They are always having to go to the children's hospital. If it's not one of them it's the other," she said.
"If they have a cold they have to go straight to the hospital.
"(Great Strides) is about raising awareness because lots of kids grow up with it."
