What compounds the town's loss is that those killed were from the one family and were well-known in the district.
In a town where the population is about 1000 the community is tight-knit and generation after generation has grown up in the area.
Adding to the disbelief being felt by those in Wedderburn and outlying areas is that Wednesday night's tragedy escalated from what was a minor dispute between neighbours.
On a day where they were trying to piece events leading up to the tragedy, Detective Superintendent Peter De Santo summed up the thoughts of many, not just those in Wedderburn, but right across the country.
"This is out to the blue, and as I've said, this has escalated out of a minor neighbourhood dispute. It's just very hard to fathom how this has all unfolded."
The answer to why this happened may never be known.
Just over an hour's drive north of Bendigo, Wedderburn is in the news for all the wrong reasons, but it's a community which has shown amazing resilience and spirit many times before.
