AS a non-religious person, I am in total agreement with the "Christian leaders" on the matter of children in detention.

The treatment of these children and their families is the is an utter disgrace. I would go as far as to say it is the best way to make enemies of these young people, alienating them and isolating them.
The idea of the Coalition and Scott Morrison to send them to a poor Asian country that cannot care for their own in a decent way is abhorrent.
These people are refugees from countries in upheaval, and when it is said that they are not "true refugees, but economic refugees", so what?
Most people in Australia are from just such backgrounds, they came here for a better life.
The only people not are the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and those from historical convicts, many of whom were better than their gaolers in moral behaviour, deported to Australia for trying to feed their families and just trying to survive in an unjust society.
And while I am writing this, I must also express my disgust for an immigration system that is ignoring the plight of an Australian family in Darwin, a system that refuses to allow the re-uniting of a family torn apart by war in their country of origin, with a son they have not seen since he was eight.
This family have gone down all of the correct pathways to get him here, to see his dying father, and still nothing. He has been in a refugee camp for many years, the family can support and sponsor him.
What has happened to a compassionate Australia?
