“We had our honeymoon in Western Australia driving from Perth to Albany and back, visiting our relations along the way,” John says.
“We met at a debutante ball in 1960 and our first night out was at a Harcourt footballers’ ball,” he adds.
“We spent many nights dancing at St Kilian’s Hall and going to other balls around the Bendigo district.”
With a family of five – four daughters and a son – life on their Sedgwick farm was busy. They raised sheep and cattle, even grew tomatoes at one time, and involved themselves in the local community.
Shearing time and the myriad of duties that living on the land necessitated came and went with the seasons.
“We love our sports,” John says, “tennis, cricket and football and travelling to Melbourne on Saturday nights for the trots at Moonee Valley. We now have a greater love of horse racing.”
Following a three-month trip around Australia, Anne and John grew bolder and to the amazement of their children, decided to take on the world.
“We couldn’t resist the temptation to travel,” John says, “so we went to America, England and a lot of Europe.
“The past 12 months has seen us visit Singapore on two occasions to see our son and daughter-in-law.” Still living on the farm, John says they were lucky to have their family home to help them celebrate their milestone together.
The icing on the anniversary cake was a Cruisin’ Country cruise that they have just returned from. “It was worth every bit of it,” Anne says.
They also enjoyed a lovely meal at Rocks on Rosalind with their five children and seven grandchildren and then spent time in the park with their extended family.
