The western region leading senior constable was caught in Marks Street just before 3.30am.
He recorded an alleged blood alcohol level of 0.052 per cent and was issued with a penalty notice for $443 and ten demerit points.
The case has been referred to the Professional Standards Command for investigation, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.
