CASTLEMAINE scored a four-shot victory against division one rival Eaglehawk in Saturday’s opening round of the Bendigo Bowls Division pennant season.
The Castlemaine line-up capitalised on home-green advantage to beat last season’s runner-up.
Rinks were split at two apiece.
The Rod Phillips-skipped rink cored a 28-20 win against Ken Rusbridge, and Peter Brain beat Frank Byrne by five shots.
Eaglehawk’s Simon Carter beat Geoff Walsh, 29-21, and Tony Ellis won a great battle with Rick Parr by a shot.
After the final bowl it was Castlemaine in front, 14-100 to 4-96.
Biggest win of the day in division one was Bendigo’s 33 shot triumph against South Bendigo.
Playing at home, Bendigo won three of four rinks.
Highlights were the 32-14 win by Andrew Brown against Noel Wilkinson, and the 29-16 win by Ian Ross against Justin Rorke.
South Bendigo’s Ray McCumber defeated Torie Babitsch, 29-22.
The Gary Carberry-skipped four from Bendigo beat John Jennings by nine shots at the Barnard Street complex.
Bendigo East started its season in fine style against Inglewood.
The Magpies won three of four contests on East’s greens in Lansell Street.
Liam Crapper beat Ian Chamberlain by nine shots, Brad Holland scored an eight-shot win against Frank Carbone, and Paul Moller defeated Lindsay Kelly, 24-10.
The sole victory for Inglewood was the 25-18 result for Daryl Rowley against David Keenan.
Reigning premier Golden Square won at Kangaroo Flat by 17 shots.
Square’s Garri Conforti beat Geoff Boyd by a shot, Tas Wallis beat Dean Carter by four, and Marc Smith scored a 13-shot win against the Roos’ Brad Marron.
Roos’ young gun Luke Hoskin beat Gary Beckham.
