Howard’s first aim is to surpass more than last season’s tally of three wins and is confident the recruits the Dragons have secured, coupled with the young talent at the club, will lead to an improved showing.
“The journey we’re on at the moment is about changing the culture and trying to get the club back up the ladder,” said Howard, who is embarking on his second season at the Dragons after crossing from Strathdale-Maristians.
“Good players want to play with good people and that’s the path we’re heading down and our kids will make natural improvement again.
“You can’t really put a limit on where we’ll end up, because who knows how good those young players like Liam Bowe and Ned Slater will be this season.”
Recruits to the Dragons this season include Chris Smith, a former New Zealand under-19 player who will bat in the top order and wicket-keep.
Batsmen Joel Schneider returns and Dustin Peebles will play full-time this season, while the Dragons have also picked up young leg-spinner Lucas Hutchinson, who played representative cricket for the North East Knights last season.
The key outs for the Dragons - who open their season against Kangaroo Flat on Saturday - are top-order batsmen Nick Scullie (to Strathfieldsaye) and Isaac Conway (Essendon).
Meanwhile, off the field, the Dragons have signed two new major sponsors in the Bendigo Door Centre and Grill'd to accompany Metal Corp Steel and Toyworld.
