AFL.com.au reported that the 26-year-old told the Demons on Wednesday that he would be leaving. He had been chased by several clubs, including Fremantle and Geelong.
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson this week said he was keen to snare the free agent, although he had downplayed the Hawks chances.
"We are interested in James' services," Clarkson said in Hobart at the team's premiership celebrations with Tasmanian fans on Wednesday.
"There's a lot of things that have got to occur over the next few days if that was to occur.
"We're probably a little bit behind the eightball given we've had a campaign to concentrate on in terms of trying to win a grand final. We'll see how that materialises over the next week."
