The policy supported at tonight’s council meeting aims to guide the location, scale and type of advertising in the municipality.
It has been considered by an Independent Panel appointed by the planning minister, which largely supported it.
“The policy gives the advertising industry and the business community confidence in the location, placement and type of signage that is preferred and likely to be approved,” Mayor Barry Lyons said.
“The policy will also help to protect the municipality's historic streetscapes, while balancing the need for advertising signs that are capable of attracting customers.”
The policy was exhibited last year and resulted in 17 submissions, with key issues raised including the scope and application of the policy, enforcement matters and proposed signage restrictions.
