GOLDEN Square's The Golden Brew is proud to be a small business.

Owners Greg and Geraldine Allman previously operated Peppers Deli & Books in Strathdale but were forced to close up due to a competitive market.

They opened the High Street cafe about five months ago and say business is booming. 

"We are doing really well, it's been very busy," Mrs Allman said.

"It's gone from strength, to strength, to strength."

The business has signed up to Support Small Business Day. The state government initiative aims to increase the competitiveness of small business and recognise their valuable contributions to the community.

Mrs Allman said there was a misconception small businesses did not offer affordable prices.

"It's so hard trying to get people to realise it's not expensive to go out to a cafe and eat," she said.

"We are not that expensive, a coffee and a cake costs around $10, it's nothing, really it's nothing."

The Golden Brew also co-ordinates its own meals-on-wheels program each morning.

"This is something big business wouldn't do," Mrs Allman said.

"We are more personal, we have a friendly atmosphere, if you want to eat breakfast at 4pm you can.

"It's quiet, people can come and have a civilised conversation."

Bendigo is celebrating Support Small Business Day with a special market day event in Bendigo's Hargreaves Mall on Saturday.

On Support Small Business Day, Bendigo residents will be encouraged to explore the local community and spend in-store at local small businesses.

Shoppers will have the chance to win prepaid gift cards to spend in participating stores on the day, thanks to Bendigo Bank.

For small businesses, the initiative is an chance to reach new customers, improve skills in marketing and build a social media presence.

The Golden Brew is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 7am to 9pm, and Sunday and Monday from 7am to 6pm.
