MANY goals were struck in Monday’s start to the Futsal Australia Schools Championships in Bendigo.

The fast-paced indoor soccer action was just that as boys and girls took to the courts at Bendigo Stadium and at Flora Hill Stadium.

Some players have travelled from far north Queensland to compete at the championships.

Tournament convenor Jade Banks said hundreds of players would be in action throughout the four-day event.

“It’s the first time we have held the Australian schools championships in Bendigo,” said Banks.

“This is a world-class stadium,” she said of Bendigo Stadium where the boys matches are being played.

“To have so many courts available is fantastic.

“We have had great support from City of Greater Bendigo and the Tourism Centre in terms of setting up for this event.”

Matches for the under-15, 16 and 19 girls, and the 16 and 19 boys are being played at Wendouree near Ballarat.

Many closely-fought matches were played out in a great start at Bendigo Stadium in Marong Road, West Bendigo.

The 11-boys between Victoria Country and Victoria Metro ended in a 4-2 win for the metro line-up.

Out at Flora Hill Stadium in Keck Street, the 12-13 girls match between Northern NSW and Queensland City ended in a 3-2 win by the NSW Blues.

Banks said hundreds of players would compete.

“Many parents have travelled here to watch these championships.”

Futsal is derived from Portugese and means small-sided football indoors.

It’s not just championship points the boys and girls will be vying for throughout the week.

Golden Boot, All Star Five and finals MVP will be announced at Thursday night’s finale.

Selectors are also casting their eye across every match as they work toward selecting teams to play overseas.

The first of Tuesday’s matches kick off at 9am at both of Bendigo’s venues.
