The government’s secrecy cannot hide that the project will be uneconomic.
Investors will not abandon Victoria, but only be deterred from this project, for which they will be thankful in the long run.
It will not deny jobs as you claim, as the money can be better spent on other more relevant and effective infrastructure, creating the same job opportunities.
Daniel Andrews has shown that he has listened to the experts and the public and has had the courage to change his mind.
As an town planner and architect with more than 50 years experience, especially in the field of transport planning, I have followed this project closely.
Every aspect of the procedure and design (or rather, lack of it) has shown the whole project has been rushed through: no real documentation, just spin; sheer incompetence shown in the hasty modifications made on the run; technical reports inconclusive (drilling still in progress); unpopular; against expert advice; financially unviable and it will be ineffective in solving Melbourne’s traffic problems - an $8 billion (or more) disaster with grave results for Melbourne in disruption, desecration and destruction.
The government should re-read the Eddington Report recommendations to find out what it should be doing, such as urgently duplicating the West Gate bridge; improving public transport, and completing the ring road.
The decision to build the East-West link was made for political reasons in complete disregard of the facts and planning principles and just because huge amounts of time and money have already been invested in this project does not mean it is worthy of completion.
Take the matter to the election.
