The former Department of Education building at 32 Forest Street was formerly occupied by St Lukes Anglicare.
The tri-level building drew spirited bidding before being knocked down to a prominent Bendigo businessman.
The new owner declined to comment on his purchase or his intentions for the building.
Zoned residential, the building has been used for commercial purposes for at least the past five years.
The auction was handled by Bendigo Real Estate.
Auctioneer Damien O'Shannessy said the sale price was a confident sign for the Bendigo market.
He said the property offered fantastic views over central Bendigo from all top floor windows and was in walking distance of everything the city had to offer.
Bidding for the property started at $700,000.
Mr O'Shannessy said the house could make a nice home for someone wanting to be close to town.
