WEDDERBURN is staring at North Central Football League history.
A win over Charlton in Saturday’s grand final at Wycheproof would be the Redbacks’ fourth flag in a row - a feat never before achieved in the NCFL.
Wycheproof-Narraport (three times), St Arnaud (once) and Watchem-Corack (once) have all won three flags in a row as well, but never has a club won four in four years.
“There’s a bit of history to be created, but it’s not something we’ve focused on as a playing group,” first-year Wedderburn coach Luke Rosa said.
“One of the things I said from the outset was even though they had won the past three flags, it was never going to be something I’d mention through the year.
“The focus is all on this year and we’re obviously pleased we’ve got ourselves into a position to push for another one.”
The Redbacks have been the side to beat all season, but they haven’t proven invincible.
While they’ve won their 15 games by an average of 83.3 points, they’ve also lost twice, with one of those defeats by one-point to their grand final opponents, Charlton, in the final round.
“We learned a hell of a lot from that round 19 loss and we’ve worked hard since then to rectify a few things to make sure it doesn’t happen again on Saturday,” Rosa said.
“We’ve got a plan in place and now it’s all about executing it.”
The Redbacks have stars on every line, while in attack they possess one of country football’s best double acts in Sam Barnes (98 goals) and Brady Herdman (62), who have kicked 160 goals between them this year.
“Like I always say, it comes back to having those strong defensive efforts first and being able to win the footy first,” Rosa said.
“We need our midfield to be able to give them a chance to kick a score, so that’s always the first area of focus.”
The Redbacks' past three grand final wins have come against Charlton (12 points last year), St Arnaud (1 point in 2012) and Wycheproof-Narraport (9 points in 2011).
Those three flags were coached by Daniel Gash, who returns to the grand final side from a calf injury.
Among those chasing their first Wedderburn flag are this year’s Feeny medallist Mark Lloyd and Nathan Bell, who between them have won nine Bendigo Football League premierships with Golden Square.
And both have won best-on-ground medals in grand finals for Golden Square.
“They both have reputations as big-game players and I’ll be certainly looking to them to lead the way on Saturday,” Rosa said.
“You could see in the second semi-final two weeks ago with the way they went about it how important they are... they set the example for the rest of the team to follow.”
In what’s a remarkable achievement as a club by Wedderburn, the Redbacks have nine of a possible 13 teams playing in grand finals on the weekend - three football; five netball and one hockey.
