Fire and Rescue New South Wales chief of staff Mal Connellan visited Bendigo to accept the thanks of the city after a joint effort between the two states during the Hazelwood mine fire.

New South Wales firefighters provided cover at the Bendigo station for six weeks as local firefighters fought the continuous blaze in the state's south east.

Mr Connellan also gave Bendigo a plaque as thanks for the city's hospitality and support during the period.

He said the way in which the two states combined could set the tone for future disaster situations.

"Relieving the pressure on areas in this this way during large scale disaster events could be the way of the future," Mr Connellan said.

"It's important to really cement these relationships."

Up to 1200 firefighters rotated through the Bendigo station during the six weeks.

City of Greater Bendigo councillor Mark Weragoda presented a plaque to Mr Connellan on behalf of the city.

Mr Weragoda said the way in which the New South Wales firefighters forged working relationships with Bendigo staff was impressive and he invited them to return.

"We hope that the friendships made during this time remain," he said.
