The City of Greater Bendigo, together with RSPCA Victoria , hosted a vaccination and microchipping day to promote responsible pet ownership.
RSPCA Bendigo shelter supervisor Mark Goodwin said hundreds of pets and their owners took advantage of the discount deals.
He said the day was about reducing the risk of disease and ensuring pets could be reunited with their owners if they became lost.
"The more animals are vaccinated, the less chance of an outbreak of disease in the community," Mr Goodwin said.
"We had an outbreak of parvovirus (a highly contagious canine disease) a couple of years ago so we're trying to prevent that happening again."
Mr Goodwin said the day couldn't have happened without the support of the city's veterinarians, including doctors from Bendigo Animal Hospital, Kangaroo Flat Veterinary Clinic and McIvor Rd Vets, as well as volunteers from Bendigo and Melbourne.
He said people were queuing outside the Bendigo East RSPCA site from early in the morning, and kept the staff flat out until lunchtime.
Mr Goodwin estimated about 200 pets were microchipped, about 250 vaccinated and up to 200 registrations.
As part of the pet health promotion, the City is also offering 150 cat desexing vouchers, which will take $40 off the normal procedure cost. The vouchers are available to registered cat owners.
The can be collected from the City's offices in Lyttleton Terrace, Bendigo and in Heathcote.
