Bakes - a premiership player at both Bendigo and Golden Square - has been involved with junior coaching at the Suns in recent seasons.
“We’re rapt to have David on board as senior coach for the coming season,” Suns secretary Michael Prowse said on Friday.
“He has been around the club for the past few years in the way of a junior coach and we’re now excited to have him on board in a senior capacity.
“He’s got a great amount of knowledge on the game and I’m sure we’ll all benefit greatly from having him in the role.”
The Suns have also announced the All Seasons Hotel as a new sponsor, with their home ground, Bell Oval, to now be known as All Seasons Oval.
“It’s fantastic to have formed a partnership with the All Seasons Hotel this season,” Prowse said.
“They’re a great fit for the club being in such close proximity.”
Linton Jacobs will continue as captain of the first XI.
Jacobs - a triple premiership captain - will skipper the Suns for the sixth-consecutive season in what’s a new club record.
The Suns’ 2014-15 Bendigo District Cricket Association season begins on Saturday, October 4, with a one-day game against Huntly-North Epsom.
