MY NAME is Kathleen Fair and I am the manager of Renal Services at Bendigo Health.
I have been in this role for almost four years, having arrived in Bendigo direct from a little town in southern Ontario, Canada.
I have been a renal nurse for over 20 years and during that time have cared for people across all of the various renal areas – pre and post transplant, chronic kidney disease, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis, paediatrics and adults.
The last several years I have focused on management of the units and services caring for these patients.
Dialysis units rely on a huge amount of technology. This technology is used to replace the function of the kidneys for patients whose kidneys no longer work. We also use this to monitor the quality of the dialysis patients are receiving, how well their bodies are handling the treatment, and to provide comfort during the treatment.
The funds raised in this year’s Fun Run will help purchase technology and other items which will be used to support our care of dialysis patients at Bendigo Health.
I have been running on and off for about eight years and have completed four half-marathons. The last was in Sydney almost two years ago, but I have not run much since then.
The Bendigo Bank Fun Run is a good incentive to get back into something I really enjoy – and with the funds raised coming to Renal Services it makes it a great incentive!
I will be running the 15 kilometres on November 2 and am looking forward to the training offered from Fusion Physiotherapy. This will go a long way with getting ready for this distance.
Writing about it will keep me motivated to stay on track – at least that’s the plan...
