The 26-year-old lost control of his car at about 8.30pm and hit a tree in Bancroft Street, Bendigo.
He was trapped in the car for some time.
Acting Sergeant Kevyn Hume-Cook of Bendigo police said the Ford Falcon was travelling east along Bancroft Street when it lost control and hit a tree near Rosalind Street.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cook said a large skid mark at the scene indicated speed was a factor.
UPDATE 9.45pm: A Bendigo Health spokeswoman said the man had been admitted to the emergency department for an assessment and was in a stable condition.
UPDATE 9.10PM: Emergency services have freed the man, who is enroute to Bendigo hospital.
UPDATE 8.45PM: A Bendigo man, 26, remains trapped after the car he was driving lost control and hit a tree in Bancroft Street, Bendigo.

The man is in a stable condition and will be taken to Bendigo Health once emergency services have freed him from the vehicle.
Alcohol and drugs tests will be undertaken at the hospital.
Acting Sergeant Hume-Cooke expected the street to be clear by 9pm.
He said investigations would continue.
EARLIER: EMERGENCY services are working to free a man involved in a crash in Bendigo tonight.
State Emergency Service officials are trying to free the trapped driver, whose car has hit a tree in Bancroft Street.
Firefighters and paramedics are also on scene.
One vehicle was involved.
The road is closed from the intersection of Barnard Street and Bancroft Street, to Rosalind Street and Bancroft Street.
