Tyler Reynolds, 18, was living with his grandmother and great-grandmother in January this year when he rifled through the woman's cupboards and stole two bracelets.
The Golden Square man later sold the jewellery, including a Pandora brand bracelet worth about $900, for "two points of ice".
Bendigo Magistrate Court heard the street value of the drugs bought was about $200.
Reynolds pleaded guilty to one count of theft on Monday.
His lawyer told the court Reynolds had apologised to his grandmother and felt remorse for his actions.
The court heard the father-of-two was looking after his elderly great-grandmother and was on the methadone program to combat his drug issues.
But Magistrate Peter Mealy said Reynolds should have gone further and made efforts to replace the jewellery he stole.
"So much for remorse," Mr Mealy said.
"This is a significant breach of trust, it is about as low as you can go.
"How much lower can you go than to steal from a (relative), an aged (relative)."
He sentenced Reynolds to a 12-month community corrections order and strongly encouraged his family to ensure compensation for the grandmother was arranged.
