Up to four men entered the kitchen area of the Montgomery Street home where they assaulted the 33-year-old sole occupant of the house.
The victim was struck to the head with a machete before the men fled from the premises.
He was taken to Bendigo Base Hospital with head injuries but has since been released.
Detectives from the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit are investigating the incident.

EARLIER: Several men wearing balaclavas broke into a Castlemaine home and assaulted a man last night.
A man, 33, received lacerations to his forehead when three to four men entered his Montgomery Street home about 9.30pm.
A police spokesperson said the man then told the men to leave and they did so.
He was taken to Bendigo Hospital for treatment.
Police detectives are investigating the scene.
