The Golden Square man is a member of the Bendigo Historical Society and lends a hand at Specimen Cottage every Thursday.
"I have been volunteering for about three years," he said.
"I think (the Bendigo Historical Society) is a great thing to have for people in our city to learn about their history."
Mr Mathews said he was introduced to the organisation after calling on them to help him with some research.
"I worked in the building industry so I do a little bit of handy work around the place," he said.
"Odd jobs, I also speak to people who come in."
Mr Mathews also volunteers at Stella Anderson nursing home, where he spends time chatting to the residents.
"I like history and listening to older people talk about their stories. I guess both places suit me," he said.
