Officially opened by Victoria's Premier Denis Napthine just last week, the exhibition is bursting at the seams with more than 100 treasures from the British Museum's world-famous Greek and Roman collections.
Visually-stunning, the exhibition is a thought-provoking exploration of the human form seen through ancient Greek eyes.
Highlights include a Roman copy of the famous Greek sculpture made by Myron in the 5th century Discobolus, a bronze figure of Zeus from the first and second century, a marble head from a colossal statue of Herakles and a marble statuette of Sokrates.
"The youngest piece is 2000 years old and the oldest is over 4500 years," project curator Sandra Bruce said.
"It's just extraordinary."
The exhibition's curator, renowned British Museum curator Ian Jenkins, has published widely on archaeology and art history, restoration and conservation history of the collections.
He worked on The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece with assistant curator Victoria Turner, with whom he recently published The Greek Body .
Ms Bruce said Dr Jenkins was impressed with how the gallery had displayed the pieces.
"You've got this fantastic juxtaposition, with a contemporary display space showing antiquities," she said.
"He was very excited by our display."
The exhibition is running from August 2 to November 9. For information, visit www.bendigoartgallery.com.au
